SOL 2

Why are the few days before winter break so hectic? In my opinion, they should be school quieting down and wrapping up, but instead, teachers decide that this is a great time to pile on homework and to have us try to do 2 weeks worth of things in only a half of a week. For example, I have 2 test corrections that were handed back to me today, and  I am expected to get them done by tomorrow. I just want to relax, and get done homework at my own pace. Sometime, schools should just learn that they are not the most important part of peoples lives. Except for Max and Kam. They actually gave us less homework than normal, like I was hoping for.

SOL 1

My sister says I abandoned my morals in order to see a small, stupid movie. However, it is not just some stupid movie. It is the movie based on possibly the greatest book of all time. Other than the lord of the rings, of course. However, the movie did not live up to the book very well at all, so I am sorry that I saw it and gave royalties to the author of the book. Orson Scott Card is a racist, sexist, homophobic idiot who I would hate, were it not for how great his books are. Ender's Game was a great book, and they need to make the movie better

Limericks

I went into town to the bank
driving a septic tank
I ran into Fred
who was buying a head
I obviously had too much to drank

Winter break is lots of fun
despite the lack of the sun
I get lots of sleep
For school I never weep
I go down many a ski run

There once was a student from logan
He aspired to be the shogun
he stayed up all night
imagining a fight
but he couldn't think of a slogan

Occasional poem

Your advances have been frequent,
and yet thus far non,
non have had the ability to compete,
compete with the novelty of your most recent shift.
The changes to this part of you,
a very important part of you,
make even your most basic functions,
functions that I have finally learned the limits of,
almost unrecognizable.
Now, because of your idea,
your decision to screw with my mental capacity,
my most basic learning,
I must completely relearn one of my most favorite hobbies.
iOS 7, you are the most recent in the line of Apple inventions,
why did you have to come now?

Curse poem

This one is about breaking ones elbow during basketball practice. (Not that it is actually broken)

May  your spuds be like rosary-beads on the stalk,
An you find the bees but not the honey,
may the guinea-fowl cry as you show yourself,
and may you have the runs on your wedding night (since your spuds were so bad),
may you be afflicted with an itch and have no nails to scratch with,
but not make my arm itchy beneath the cast.
oh I hate you broken bones,
 go across yourself!

The most important thing in life is eating potatoes, so i figured that was the best opening curse.
It is really hard to type with only your left hand.

Free verse thing

Math
the one thing that I can do without thinking
Tests
the one part of math I don't like
Fun
the one word that nobody else seems to pair with math

Week hyperlink

Hi Y'all
This week I read the pact. It was pretty good. It is about 3 guys who make a pact to be doctors and all fulfill their destiny. I would recommend it to anyone reading this.

Week 11

This week I read the second Artemis Fowl, which is called "Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident." It was a good book, but wasn't quite as good as the first one. I also read the third one, "The Eternity Code," which was a pretty good book as well. Overall, I would say that these books have a good plot, and are easy reads, so are a pretty good choice if one likes books written for a much younger age group

Week 10

This week I read "Artemis Fowl." This book just barely meets the requirements for a book of the week, and is below most everyone's reading level in the class. However, it is a great fantasy type book that has a good plot line and is pretty well written. It takes very little time to read, so is a good book if one forgot to pick their book of the week at the beginning of the week.

Week Whatever it is

This week I read "What Einstein Told His Barber" by Robert L. Wolke. This book is a great nonfiction book about little random tidbits of science. It talks about everything from how to save yourself from a falling elevator to how to do an Ollie. Many random awesome facts to learn. I would recommend it to anyone who likes science or would like to know more about science. Amazing book.

Week 8 Reading

Hi,
The book I read last week was a two week book, so I continued to read the Fellowship of the Ring. Same deal as last time about author and genre. If you don't know 'em, I shun you forever. Also, if you haven't read this book, your reading has been very sheltered and you need to hurry up and read it. This book could very easily be the greatest book of all time, so if you are sitting there thinking "Well, I could read it, but fantasy is not really me kind of reading," just read it and get on with your life.

Week 7 Reading

This week I read The Fellowship of the Ring. If you don't know the author, I shun you forever.
This very well could be the greatest book in the world. It is some difficult reading to be sure, but it's story is amazing, and Tolkien easily could be the greatest story teller ever. He makes a very complicated and fantastical story seem simple and realistic. He also does a great job of describing the scene very well. It is very  easy to see what everything looks like and what everyone looks like. I think that everyone who has not read this book three or four times should stop what ever they are doing and read all of the Lord of the Rings books.

Week 6 Book

Title: Insurgent
Author: Veronica Roth
Genre: Dystopian Fiction
This book was in no way as good as its predecessor, Divergent. Insurgent spent too much time looking at the relationship in the book and the real story moved very slowly. It was still an ok book, because it is about war, but there was very little of that part. The plot was very predictable, and so as long as one has read Divergent, they know exactly what happens in Insurgent and how. Roth tried to add a twist in the middle, which was a very predictable twist, and she tried a twist ending, which was also very predictable.
Next week and the week after i will read The Fellowship of the Ring.

Week 4 Reading

Divergent by Veronica Roth
Genre: Dystopian Fiction
Review: I really liked this book. I think it captures the struggle to fit in with a specific group pretty well. I think the writing style that Veronica Roth uses makes it pretty easy to read which I very much liked. I liked this style since it was long enough to be a two week book, but with the ease of reading only just makes it more than a one week book, and so I could read through it very quickly.
Next I will read its sequel, Insurgent

Week 3 Reading

Divergent by Veronica Roth
487 pages
Genre: Dystopian  Fiction, Coming of Age
Reading Level: Easy to read, but long
Synopsis: A girl is growing up in a future world that is in present day Chicago. The humans have been split into a set of groups that each value a quality to the extent that they see nothing in a person except whether they have a quality or not. She gets tested and finds out that she fits into two groups, which is dangerous.
Response: I have been reading this as a two week book and I am only one week in, but so far I think that it is a good book. I like it because I think that as long as you are persistent through the slow beginning, the story gets very good. Roth over exaggerates the qualities in some people, like the evil kid is really evil, without any good. Over all the book and characters are good, and there back stories are often very complex.
Next Book: This is a two week book, so I will continue to read this.

Week 2 Book Response

This week I read The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels is a historical fiction book about the Battle of Gettysburg. This was a hard read for me, because despite the fact that it is only 345 pages and the type is a moderate size, the people in it speak with weird grammar and a lot happens very quickly on every page. I think that people who generally enjoy reading books about war will enjoy this book, especially if they enjoy learning about the Civil War. The book follows six officers through the three days that could potentially be called the Battle of Gettysburg, from the point that John Buford spots General Lee's confederate forces to the point that Lee orders that the confederates retreat.

To Be Read List:
Eldest
Of Mice and Men
White Sands, Red Menace
Green Glass Sea
The Client
Outliers
Divergent
Night circus
Forgive Me Leonard Peacock
Battle Cry
Stranger in a Strange Land
Shooting the Moon
See you at Harry's

This week I plan to read Divergent

Intro

I am Theo Culhane. My full first name means gift from god, and Theo means god. I have been to 36 countries in my life. I am in eighth grade at The Logan School in Max and Kam's class. When I grow up I would like to be a unicorn, a mermaid, a chemist, or an engineer. That list is in order of top choice to fourth choice. I like to hike and fish.

Three books that I like are:
1.) The Killer Angels by Michel Shara
I like this book because I think it captures the feelings of the soldiers well. Also, it explains the tactics well.
2.) Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
I thought this was a good book about a super awesome person. It also shows how horrible war is. However, boycott the movie, because the author is a sexist, racist person.
3.) Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card
Another great book by a stupid person. This is a great science fiction book about a parallel universe. A good book that I couldn't put down.
